Traffic calming measures to be installed, Highbridge

TRAFFIC calming measures are being installed in Highbridge in a bid to tackle a 'rat run'.

Now Somerset County Council has confirmed cushions are being put along the top end of Worston Road, Donston Road and New Bell Way.

Last month the Weekly News reported how pensioner John Hart launched a petition to end the 'rat run of cars travelling at dangerous speeds.'

The 80-year-old, from Worston Road, collected 47 signatures but has complained these cushions will not benefit his end of the road.

He said: “I live 1.7 metres from the road and I need the speeding to stop. These changes aren't going to help on my road at all.”

A council spokesman said: “This [cushions] is a way of reducing speeds and reducing cars that use these roads as a rat run. These cushions are funded by the local developer as part of their planning conditions.”

“We've been monitoring speeds along the other end of Worston Road with the police and average speed checks have been 25mph. We will continue to monitor speeds in the area but no further measures are planned.”

Members of Burnham and Highbridge Town council previously suggested installing chicanes along the southern part of the road where speedsters are causing misery for residents and businesses.
