Hockey: Weston 0, Burnham Ladies 2
7:50pm Tuesday 16th March 2010
THE Blues made a strong start to the match and had opportunities to spread the play across the width of the pitch with Emma Smith and Nicki Brice winning tackles in advanced positions.
The first goal came early after Smith released the ball to Caroline Hunt, who sprinted into the D and slipped it to June England to pirouette the ball into the bottom corner.
Carly Bush made some crucial interceptions in centre midfield and was able to whip a couple of balls through to Amy Edmundson, who was always eager to run at Weston’s defence.
After the break, Weston had a couple of half- chances but were dealt with in a calm manner by goalkeeper Tracey Dunn.
Backed up by the defence, Burnham worked as a team to keep their lead. Brice had a crucial block on the line and was at the hub of the defence, creeping in front of the attackers and winning back possession.
Towards the end, Smith’s vision sent the ball through for Hunt as she drove forward to send in a cross for England to score a mirror of her first goal.
Burnham face Bridgwater at home on Saturday.
Player of the match: Nicki Brice
